the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that political boycotts are protected free speech. That case involved the Knesset-passed law against boycotting or supporting boycotts of Israel.  The BDS movement (Boycott, Divest and Sanction) is an international effort to punish Israel for occupying the West Bank.  The Israeli Supreme Court boldly struck down parts of this law as protected free speech.  In direct contrast, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in International Longshoremen's Association v. Allied International, Inc., 456 U.S. 212 (1982) that a labor union had no free speech right to boycott Soviet ships to protect the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. The Israeli Supreme Court got it right: boycotts are speech and should be protected in a democracy.
