Not understanding the word ‘litter’, I bluffed by nodding my head.

 

“Where are they anyway?” the man said.

“Your parents.”

 

“Daddy’s gone, and Momma’s at home,” I said.

 

“Your mother let you go trick or treating by yourself?” the man said with an edge in his voice.

 

Sensing that I had done something wrong, I said, “I gotta go.”
