Dennis set the extra mic between the P.A. amp and the Fender about five feet in front.

   “Whenever you guys are ready, let's run through it for levels,” Dennis said. “Alice, walk down to the end of the room and give me the okay if you can hear us.”

   Alice nodded and walked a hundred or so feet to the back of the hall, turned and crossed her arms.

   “Sixteen Tons,” Dennis said to the two.

   Duane and Dennis stepped up to the microphones, and Lonny counted off four with his sticks.

   They began the popular cover song, their vocals and music bouncing off the walls of the empty meeting room. Alice took her thumb and motioned upward, signaling them to increase volum...
